How to have more fun

I just realized that art is SUPPOSED TO BE FUN! It doesn't have to make a political statement. It's life, and I'm making my life into art starting now.

  • I'll do at least one fun thing each day.
  • I want to waddle and kick in the mud.
  • I want to get naked and throw big gobs of paint.
  • Paintball. Fun? Stupid? Does it HURT?? Can you do it naked?
  • I used to like climbing trees.
  • I want to take up space.
  • I want to take pictures again.
  • Ben suggested I learn to play a xylophone or flute. I'll move my body, make music, make art and even commune with others.
  • I want to dance and not care if I look stupid.
  • Adult playground?
  • I want to stop being so dark and serious just because I'm going for this degree, because I know fun and profound can coexist!
  • I want to do something illegal.
  • I want to do free stuff, loose stuff, LOUD STUFF.
  • I WANT TO YELL FROM THE TOP OF A SOMETHING TALL.
  • I want to take up SPACE.
  • I want to paint my body with a bigass brush.

Me to my friend who doesn't want his name mentioned: "How much fun do you have? How do you have fun, because you seem like someone who has a lot of fun." .

my friend who doesn't want his name mentioned: "When I sit alone with my coffee on the front porch each morning, I try to plan how I'll play that day. I'm not conscious of it exactly, but I evaluate the likely percentage of my duties in terms of 30% drudge work/70% play. That's a decent day. Of course, 100% play days are the goal... especially if I can get paid... but it's not the only factor. 'Play' is more important than 'payment' but I like the combined concept."

I asked Marty how to judge good art, if art should push boundaries, reveal personal truths or say something nobody else has the balls to say. He's been doing avant garde art all his life, and he really thought about it for me, but then he said, "Alex, honestly, I'd like to say I write my poetry for the money or for the recognition... but honestly, I just do it because it's fun."

Well, I'll be dipped in shit! My two current obsessions - play and art - smashed into each other. Isn't it cool when things in your life fit together the way they're supposed to? Makes me think I'm going in the right direction, on the way to somewhere wonderful.
